Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead
So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.
When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.
But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.

A girl, with black veins snaking up her pale skin with black eyes and lips, a dark goddess, with her dress dripping blood on the floor.  That's scary alright. But I don’t really loved loved this book, but I do like it in some ways. I loved Cas, a boy who hunts ghost and kill them “again” with his special knife called athame which was left by his late father- murdered by unknown. Cas apparently took over this job after his father died, also to seek revenge. He travels with his witch mom from place to place to kill the new subject. Came one day, evil ghost Anna who have murdered a lot of people were Cas’ next hunt. From there he will meet friends he never had before, and a unique kind of ghost he never encountered his whole life hunting.

OK so this is kind of predictable well at least predictable for me though I was intrigued how Anna died, and what was making her evil. I loved the characters and liked the humors. I also loved being inside of Cas mind and knowing his feelings. Though the whole story didn’t really put me under spell, it was an okay read. The start was very good but then halfway through, I had a hard time connecting to the story. I got bored and frustrated when they were hunting the flesh-eating monster I had to skip a lot of pages just to get to what I find exciting.

So this is only my opinion, It would have been better if the story had stuck with ghost and not a monster who suddenly came out of the knife, I kind of find it improbable and a bit corny,  and when the "athame"(knife-thing) was stolen, it took him ages to get it from his friend.

But then again don’t take my word for it, you may like it or even love it too. I wont say I hate this book because I have kind of enjoyed it too. And I will not deny it, I still want to read the second installment. I am kind of curious what will happen next.

Author Interview: Shea Berkley + THE MARKED SON Giveaway

Facebook / Website / Goodreads / Twitter / Shea's GroupWebsite /

Today, we have Shea Berkley here on my blog, let us welcome the author of The Marked Son as she talks about her books, herself and some other cool stuff.

Thanks for inviting me on your blog, Lalaine. I love talking with people about books and writing, so bring it.

1.) What inspired you to write The Marked Son? Can you tell us more about this awesome book?

You think The Marked Son is awesome? (blush) I think I’m in serious like with you. (big grin)

(ahem) Back to the question. I love fantasy. Always have. I’m big into fairy tales too. There’s nothing cooler than creating a world that is sort of like ours, but not. It’s the surprise of the unfamiliar within the familiar that makes me grin. So when I created The Marked Son, I wanted to highlight that aspect of fantasy. I wanted some place familiar, yet not. I could have gone to the extreme of making Kera’s world crazy different, but then that would have pulled me into a direction I didn’t want to go. I wanted to concentrate on Dylan and Kera, not necessarily the parallel realm.

Once I knew I wanted to write a fantasy, I asked my fallen angels (aka my children) what they wanted to read. Easy. They’re huge fantasy readers and they told me the one thing they absolutely wanted to read was a book in the guy’s point of view.

Easy. I can do that. So I rolled up my sleeves and pounded out Dylan’s story. It’s a mesh of realism (he has some really horrible real life issues) and fantasy (I got to play with tons of mythical creatures). What’s not to love about that?

2.) I noticed that female authors hardly do this male main character in a book even some male authors would choose a female as well. But Dylan was a very effective one, why male and not a female character?

You know, I believe in telling the story that appears in your head. I never saw anyone but Dylan as the main character. I wanted to tell his story, about being abandoned by his mom, about facing that abandonment with strength and not letting it determine his worth as a person.

Apart from that, I love guys. They make me laugh. I’ve had great platonic relationships with guys throughout my life, and they’ve taught me a lot, so it felt really natural to tell this story from a male point of view.

3.) What is your favorite part in writing a book?

Wait, are you telling me writing stories is supposed to be fun?

Heck yeah it is!

Favorite part? Developing the characters. I love character arcs and story arcs and theme and all that jazz. I’m the puppet master and nobody does nothin’ without my say so. Muahahaha!

4.) Is it important in naming your characters right when writing a book?

I don’t know how other writers do the name game, but I need to nail those names pretty fast. I scour baby name books and look at meanings, but in the end it’s mostly about how the name sounds within the story. Weird huh?

5.) Are you working on a book/novel at the moment? If you are please tell us a bit about it.

Twist my arm. Go ahead. I’ll never tell! Never! (okay, ouch! You can let go now)

Seriously, I’m working on the second and third books in the Keeper of Life series. I can’t tell you much about them. I don’t like to talk about the stories I’m currently working on, but I can say they focus on Dylan and Kera and how they deal with the powers they have and how their lives have changed and continue to change.

Nobody is safe. Yep. Nobody.

6.) Do you have any upcoming events you’d like to announce here?

I have another book coming out November 1st 2011. Yep that’s coming up pretty fast. Torrrein: Age of Fear is an epic Fantasy and a really fun ride suitable for ages 10-110. Here’s a quick overview:

What if the only hope of saving a magical world depended on an ordinary boy?

Peace is not easily found in the divided kingdom of Taelyon; its mortals distrust anything magical; its wizards are indifferent to the suffering of others, and hate infects everyone. The battle for dominance is never ending. Yet, there is hope in a boy named Torrein. When magic is denied him, he's chased from his own village by those he once called friends. Torrein doesn't understand that his destiny is far greater than any he could have achieved if magic had been granted him. Who wants a destiny soaked in blood? All Torrein wants is what he can't have—to be with his family and friends.

To claim his rightful power, Torrein must calm his fears and reveal the real evil working to destroy Taelyon. It will be a fight till the end of the age to reclaim the freedom they’ve all been denied, and though it's hard for him to accept, it’s up to Torrein to protect those who have been deceived, and to make sure the evil in their midst doesn't kill them all.

7.) I've read your homepage and I have enjoyed it. I've also learned that you have dyslexia, but still manage to write books. I thought that was inspiring, do you have any last thoughts for our readers and future writers?

Dyslexia is not fun. Being a writer with dyslexia is laughable. Honestly, not in a million years would I have believed I would end up a writer when I was younger.

Advice? Never stop reading and never stop writing. To get better at anything takes practice and writing is no exception. Out of all the crazy, weird things I’ve tried, writing is about the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m seriously not into self-flagellation, be it physical or mental, so why I keep pounding on the keyboard is a mystery.

The best advice I ever got: Write, rewrite and then rewrite it again and when you think you’re done, go back and rewrite it one last time. Don’t kid yourself. Editing is the real meat and bones of writing. It always has been and always will be. Never settle for good enough.

Also, don’t worry if others don’t like what you’re writing. You can’t please everyone. Never, ever let others determine the worth of your story. If you ever do get feedback, listen, say thank you, and then keep what makes sense and ignore the rest. That said, be content to just write because there is never a guarantee your story will ever be read by anyone but yourself.

*That's all thank you Shea Berkley. An avid fan of you, and The Marked Son.*

Thanks, Lalaine. I like avid fans.

The Marked Son by Shea Berkley
Entangled Publishing

Seventeen-year-old Dylan Kennedy always knew something was different about him, but until his mother abandoned him in the middle of Oregon with grandparents he's never met, he had no idea what. When Dylan sees a girl in white in the woods behind his grandparents' farm, he knows he's seen her before...in his dreams. He's felt her fear. Heard her insistence that only he can save her world from an evil lord who uses magic and fear to feed his greed for power.
Unable to shake the unearthly pull to Kera, Dylan takes her hand. Either he's completely insane or he's about to have the adventure of his life, because where they're going is full of creatures he's only read about in horror stories. Worse, the human blood in his veins has Dylan marked for death...

Read the excerpt:

Nothing feels better than touching Kera. I hold her close, feeling her heart beat behind her ribs. The heat of her hands on my chest is impossible to ignore as I kiss her, teasing her lips, and ultimately torturing myself until my control is almost gone. I pull away, putting my forehead to hers, and silently count to ten. Counting to a hundred wouldn’t help. Holding her intensifies my feelings of recklessness.
I can’t let go.
I pick her up. You’d think her dress, with its yards of material would be a problem, but it isn’t. Not for her. She wraps her legs around my waist and rakes her hands through my hair. I place my head on her chest and close my eyes. The rapid beat of her heart matches my own. The scent that engulfs her is as heady as the feel of her in my arms.
“You smell like summer and—” I search for the word that describes the scent pulsing under her skin. It teases me with every breath and touch. Naming it is driving me insane. It’s one I haven’t smelled on her before, yet it’s a scent that’s all too familiar to me, like summer and… “—sadness.”
She captures my lips with hers and slowly slides down my body until her feet touch the floor. Our kiss deepens, her embrace turns desperate. Her kiss fills with misery. The room turns hot, too claustrophobic. I can’t think. I try pushing her away, but she clings to me. Her breathing quickens, and she shivers within my arms. I sense real fear in her. Though she protests, I finally manage to step free. One, two, three steps back, separate but still connected. I can’t stop staring at her, wanting her. She’s like…
A drug.

When Dylan sees a girl in white in the woods behind his grandparents' farm, he knows he's seen her before...in his dreams. He's felt her fear. Heard her insistence that only he can save her world from an evil lord who uses magic and fear to feed his greed for power.

Either he's completely insane or he's about to have the adventure of his life, because where they're going is full of creatures he's only read about in horror stories. Worse, the human blood in his veins has Dylan marked for death...
I thought  this book was refreshing, imaginative and unique in its own kind of way. And I LOVED IT!

It’s about this tall and handsome boy named Dylan- seventeen year old , who doesn’t know his true identity, never knew his father, never had a permanent  place to live and has a wrecked mother who dumped  him to his grandparents he never knew he ever had.  Dylan’s grandparents live in a countryside which he hated the most. As much as Dylan wanted to leave because he knew his grandparents would soon give him up too, they did take him as their own and care for him when her mother never did.

But there is a lot more that he didn’t know, the reason why his over-dramatic mother abandoned him, the reason why the woods goes alive when his around and the feeling like he was being watched. But it didn’t take long before the weirdest and strangest things came chasing him, sheep died mysteriously, tiny glowing thing called pux are showing up, and then right in the woods he saw a familiar girl...  From there Dylan will find out something surreal  and he will be one of the causes of the havoc in Teag and the world he thought he was one of. What would it take for him to save the only girl he ever loved? Would Dylan be able to save those who cares for him? or he would let them down too, like he always thought he does with his mom?

If only I could tell you the whole story I would, it was fabulous. First of all, I loved Dylan, and Kera  a beautiful girl from the other dimension or let say another magical world and lets not forget Bodog. Characters were really effective, I disliked or  more like hated Dylan’s mom, idolized Kera’s braveness, amused by his newly-found friends, loathed Navar’s pretentious intention, and adored Dylan most of all. He was my favorite,  life he grew up sort of resembles reality that some people may have had. I did really feel for him. Creatures and magic this was just amazing.

This book is in a third person (Kera) and first –person (Dylan) mode , which I really did enjoy. Like I always say on my reviews, it is nice connecting and relating to the character's thoughts and emotions, and knowing Dylan’s was something else. He has this kind of attitude that I like, what was it?ahh  I cannot quite put a finger on it.. just look at that cover eeeh. ha ha

Seriously I want more of this series. I cannot wait to read the second installment, something in the ending that gave me a teensyweensy glimpse of what next book could be. But yea! Kera and Dylan are just so good together!  Shea did a wonderful job writing this book.

A dark, romantic, magical and thrilling story that I was hooked on every pages!

"I love you, I love you, I love you."

Where do you go when nowhere is safe?
Sixteen years after a deadly virus wiped out most of Earth’s population, the world is a perilous place. Eighteen-year-old Eve has never been beyond the heavily guarded perimeter of her school, where she and two hundred other orphaned girls have been promised a future as the teachers and artists of the New America. But the night before graduation, Eve learns the shocking truth about her school’s real purpose—and the horrifying fate that awaits her.
Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Arden, her former rival from school, and Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust . . . and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

I thought this book was a good read. Actually, I kind of don't know if I really liked it or just like it.. The story goes around a young orphan naive girl Eve, kept behind the walls of the school for girls only- where she lived most of her entire life, oblivious to the real world(98 percent of human got killed by the plague, its like the world is in a devastated state, so here comes the new America).

They were brainwashed, that men could be “manipulative, conniving and dangerous”, therefore should be avoided like a disease. But there’s an exception, Only the King can be trusted. The only man in this world to be obeyed. But Eve dreams of going to The City of Sand, the King’s Capitol to start her career and new life with freedom. The night before her graduation day, Eve found out something, something unbelievable and terribly cruel.

From there Eve knew shes in great danger, and all of those students in her school. She knew she couldn’t stay any longer but what to do when she doesn’t know how to survive beyond the campus walls? There’s wild animals out there, or worse, dangerous men. ..But she had to leave anyway, she needs to find Califia, the only safe place for her.. What fate awaits her?

This was written in first-person, and I quite enjoyed the writing style of this book, the tone was kind of solemn and dramatic, the concept was good. the diction was pleasing. It is always nice to experience the thoughts of the narrator yes? To relate with Eve's feelings, her emotions, about her dead mother, about her friends and this young guy she met along her journey to find Califia, his name is Caleb. I thought Eve was a spirited girl, full of hopes, annoying or say frustrating sometimes but that's probably because of the impression of her growing up in a made-up surrounding.  There were boring and irritably scenes though, but I couldn't really hate-hate this book.

The ending was touching, emotional, a cliffhanger for me. ok I got teary eyes, It was disheartening yet hopeful at the same time, something like that.  My heart aches for Eve and Caleb. I didn’t know the ending was going to be so sad so I need happy ending please? Personally if you ask me which one I like better between WITHER and EVE, I’d go with EVE. At least this one wasn't only set in a house. Well if you loved Wither then you will probably loved EVE more then. Some might hate this some wont so you''ll be the judge. For now Hope you have a good Thursday. Cheers!

          *Thank you HarperCollins and Netgalley.

The Iron Queen (The Iron Fey series #3) by Julie Kagawa

The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa

Release Date: January 25th 2011Publisher: Harlequin Teen
          Series: The Iron Fey #3
          Format:  Paperback, 358 pages
          Source: Owned
          Buy this book: Amazon

          My name is Meghan Chase.
I thought it was over. That my time with the fey, the impossible choices I had to make, the sacrifices of those I loved, was behind me. But a storm is approaching, an army of Iron fey that will drag me back, kicking and screaming. Drag me away from the banished prince who's sworn to stand by my side. Drag me into the core of conflict so powerful, I'm not sure anyone can survive it.
This time, there will be no turning back.

I think this is my favorite in the series. This book blew me away, I mean I really felt for Puck and Ash with their feelings towards Meghan and their unbearable despair when she was in between life and death, those scenes were priceless.  But before anything else, I’m going to share to you the first time I grabbed  the IRON KING. I was already drawn from the first page,  then stopped when I reached the part where Beau was sent to the dog pound. I am a dog lover and as much as possible I really avoid books with dogs ending up somewhere cruel.  I know its not a big deal  but its just me, after awhile, I thought hmm. I don’t think the author is capable of doing that in this book, everybody loved her series why cant I?

So I did another try and I was totally under spell with The Iron King, I loved Meghan, Ash and Puck, and every characters that are included in this wonderful fantasy world. I knew Beau would be somewhere in this series and yay he unexpectedly showed up in the 3rd book! But lets put Beau aside now, I don’t want you to think that Its only because of the dog, nah. I LOVED LOVED LOVED  every book of THE IRON FEY series and I loved Julie Kagawa. I mean wow, she really do know how to make her readers overflow with excitement with the romance scenes and make us cry with the heartbreaking scenes. I did cry I swear I wanted to get into the scene and kiss and comfort Puck lol.

And I am telling you, this book kicks ass. Witnessing Meghan transform from a young lady into a unselfish sensible queen, accepting her destiny, and everyone's united and had accepted everything, Puck from letting go. And by the way, Meghan is the only heroin character that was never annoying or overly emotional.

And also, I still don’t know which one to choose between Ash and Puck, I mean I cant really choose only one. The two of them has the characteristics of a guy that I really loved in a hero, though in the end it has to be one which I am dreadful of, I would be okay with it if Julie will just choose it for me. I am still overwhelmed with so much emotions from this book that I could still remember those awful scenes and makes me want to breakdown and cry again.

I knew by the time I finished this book that Id be suffering from a nail biting season till October. And I hate it. The thing is this book had been sitting on my shelf for awhile now and I promised myself to read it a week before the Iron Knight comes out. But duh, I'm only human, I ain't a fey you know nor a half-breed  so yeah. Couldnt keep that promise. Well I would like to thank you Julie for writing this wonderful books to us. It really made my day!  I'm sorry if my review are all over the place, I just finished this book a few hours ago. But you only need one thing to know about this book, Its EXTRAORDINARY. So if you haven't read this series yet, you re surely missing the fun.

          Blake Duchamp...

He's all that Winter Adams can think of. Ever since their fateful meeting at Pilgrim's Lament. Ever since he looked at her with those emerald eyes. Ever since he saved her life.

But Blake isn't all that he seems. There is a strangeness about him, something dark and otherworldly. Something dangerous. In his attic is a secret he would kill to defend, but Winter seems to have a special ability to make him forget his duty. And he is her only protection against the gathering darkness.

The only problem is, to protect Winter, Blake must risk exposing her to an even greater danger. Himself.

Wow, a unique, dark love story, that made me want to keep on reading this novel,  or at least that what I felt about this book. I should say I was totally impressed with the authors imagination. WINTER'S SHADOW was beyond what I expected, since reading through some reviews about this book, I had second thoughts  but I still did it anyway. And it turned out to be really really good, I actually LOVED it. Some said it was predictable, for me, yes but only the ending part. It’s not like its already out in the open from the start and will ruin your reading, it isn’t like that. Or maybe I must have missed some lines but I don’t think it was that predictable that could spoil everything.

The story was amazingly smooth, the narration and the words were very tasteful. It was told in three different point of view. From Winter’s, Blake’s and then Madeleine’s. Ill do what I can not to give away too much about this book, So our heroine Winter, a high school girl who practically lived all her life by being invisible, unlike her bestfriend Jasmine who was very outspoken and can date almost anyone she likes.  One day, Winter has to go up check out the old church at the top of Owl Mountain to take photos of the ruins. But strange things happened in that eerie place and she saw someone, an achingly beautiful young man standing over the grave. Hypnotized by the scene Winter tried to secretly snatch some shot of him and then danger happened. That changed Winter’s life forever.

Blake , I think he's such a perfect character in this book. As well as Winter. And let’s not forget the cute cat Nefertem, that played so much in this story. I also found myself fearing for Winter and Blake’s life and their misfortune romance. Loved the actions, when Winter was kidnapped, chased by the soul thieves and faced a demented Demori in the end.  I thought it was intense. Secrets revealed through out the story. Overall, it was thrilling, dark and creepy young adult paranormal fantasy packed in one captivating book. The author did an amazing job writing WINTER’S SHADOW, not to mention that this was his first novel.  And to know that this is a series was really exciting. Though I wasn’t happy with what the ending was(because it was sad) It was bit of a cliffhanger(damn!), and I'm anxious to know whats gonna happen next! The dark mysteries and doomed love,  feeds the spirit of this enthralling novel. I want more! Oh and the cover, simple yet striking.

By the way, you can download the first 80 pages of WINTER'S SHADOW here or at the authors website.
